AKKUYU NPP

Akkuyu NPP (Akkuyu Nükleer Güç Santrali in Turkish) is a nuclear power plant under construction on the south coast of Turkey.  Akkuyu NPP is being constructed according to the Russian project, which includes the construction and commissioning of four power units with VVER-1200 reactors. The agreement on the construction of the plant was signed in May 2010.

On April 3, 2018, during a joint ceremony in Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the start of the construction of the plant via video link.

The electric capacity of each unit of the Turkish nuclear power plant is 1200 MW, the total capacity is 4800 MW. According to the Russian-Turkish intergovernmental Agreement signed on May 10, 2010, in Ankara, the first power unit will come into operation within seven years after obtaining a construction license. The units are expected to be put into operation progressively at intervals of one year, starting with 2023. The total cost of the construction of the nuclear power plant is 22 billion US dollars.

The design choices of Akkuyu NPP are announced as meeting all modern requirements of the world nuclear community stated in the IAEA and the International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group safety standards, and the EUR requirements.

The Intergovernmental Agreement allows foreign investors to acquire the share capital of the company in the amount of not more than 49%. The construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey is the first nuclear power plant project in the world being implemented on the BOO (build-own-operate) model. Russian contractors commit themselves to the plant designing, constructing, maintaining, commissioning and decommissioning. The general customer, project investor, and owner of the plant after launch is going to be JSC Akkuyu Nükleer (Akkuyu Nükleer Anonim Şirketi). The plant general designer is Atomenergoproekt. The plant construction general contractor is CJSC Atomstroyexport (a Rosatom subsidiary). The technical client is OJSC Concern Rosenergoatom. The lcensing adviser is LLC InterRAO-WorleyParsons. The project supervisor is the Kurchatov Institute SIC. The reactor unit general designer is JSC EDB Gidropress.

The most of equipment and high-tech product delivery for the project implementation falls on Russian enterprises. The project includes the maximum participation of Turkish companies in construction and erection works, as well as companies from other countries.
