KURSK NPP-2

Kursk NPP-2 is a nuclear power plant under construction in the village of Makarovka in the Kurchatov district of the Kursk region. On April 29, 2018, the first cubic meters of concrete were poured into the base plate of the reactor building containing a power unit No. 1.

The plant is designed to replace the Kursk NPP gradually according to the degree of its resource expiration, so the first two power units of the Kursk NPP-2 are to be commissioned before the first two units of the Kursk NPP are put out of operation (approximately in 2020). In this regard, Rosenergoatom in 2012 made attempts to reduce the construction time with the introduction of the first blocks in 2019–2021 [2], however, at the moment, commissioning of the 1st block seems to be in 2023.

The reactor chief designer is the Hydropress experimental design bureau, the scientific director of the Kursk NPP-2 project is the Kurchatov Institute national research center, the engineering researcher and the developer of the basic part of the project is the Atomenergoproekt [3] (it became part of the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation in 2015).
